Artist Statement & Bio ~
I live in the southern Appalachians and draw much of my
inspiration from my beautiful surroundings. I received a B.S.
in Botany from Virginia Tech to fulfill a desire for a deeper
knowledge of the natural world. After leaving a career in
theatre, I moved to the small, arts-oriented communities of
Western North Carolina where I am now a full-time artist.
I primarily paint in acrylics and combine my seemingly
disjointed background into a foundation for expressing an
idealized nature that focuses on shape and color. By utilizing a
primary rule of theater design, that of simplicity -- eliminating
all that is not absolutely necessary to communicate the essence
of the source material -- my paintings employ simple lines and
tones to allow the contours to take center stage.
Foremost a self-taught artist, I have attended classes at the
Penland School of Craft and at the Ringling College of Art and
Design’s Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, NC. My
education continues with each new painting and from the
interactions with my fellow, local artisans.
My artwork may be seen on this website as well as on
www.Etsy.com. I do participate in a few festivals and have
gallery openings throughout the year, so visit my Contact page
for more specific details.
